Good Reasons To Shop In Canada

By J.C. Carroll

Most of us don’t travel to shop for practical reasons, choosing instead to search for deals close to home. Still, there are a number of Canadians who will take their long shopping lists south of the border.

“It’s a personal choice,” says Sean Wilson, director of merchandizing for Future Shop. “But making all that effort on the roads, at the border, with customs officials and receipts doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

Shopping in Canada:
1. Don’t have to deal with border line-ups and delays
2. Don’t have to deal with border duties, taxes and customs declarations
3. Saves money on transportation, meals and overnight stays
4. Avoids impulse shopping and over-shopping, with more time to make decisions
5. Avoids long trips to make a return
6. Gets it done sooner
7. Gives you more time for friends, parties and celebrations
8. Supports the local economy
9. Gives you Canadian-supported warranties

Retail industry observers point out that prices will never be the same on both sides of the border, due to the higher costs of transportation, labour, tariffs, as well as the requirement for bilingual packaging in Canada. However, due to so much temptation on the doorstep, retailers here have no choice but to pressure manufacturers to lower their prices.
