A group of Markham-area business leaders has come together to lend its support to “Leading Through Excellence”, Seneca College’s $10 million capital appeal in support of its new Markham Campus.
With David Tsubouchi, counsel with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, as Honorary Chair and former Markham Mayor Donald Cousens as Chair, the Markham Fundraising Cabinet will work with Seneca to help raise funds needed to support the renovations and capital infrastructure of the Markham Campus.
“I am pleased to lead this campaign to fully realize our long-standing goal of having an exceptional postsecondary institution in Markham and York Region,” said Tsubouchi.
A community leaders’ breakfast to launch the capital appeal took place on April 3rd at the Angus Glen Golf Club. This was an opportunity for Seneca President Dr. Rick Miner to explain the positive local impact of the new Campus and remind business leaders of the role they play in the development of post secondary education in Markham and York Region.
“Across Canada and throughout the world, the tie between education and prosperity has been recognized,” said Dr. Miner. “And that’s why Seneca came to Markham. But in order for Seneca to be a valuable contributor to Markham, we need to know what you’re looking for, and we need your support to help us stay competitive.” Among those in attendance was Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, who discussed the $500,000 investment the Town of Markham made to the Campus and encouraged local business leaders to get involved in the campaign.
“The benefits of having a local post secondary education are many, from a business and cultural perspective,” said Mayor Scarpitti. The Town of Markham is acutely aware of this, which is why we were so dedicated to bringing Seneca here.”
The Markham Campus has been designed with business priorities in mind. It is located in the former Allstate Insurance Building in the centre of Markham’s business corridor and offers career-building and training opportunities, as well as facilities and research partnerships aimed at attracting small and medium-sized enterprises. Programs offered at the Markham Campus include brand management, travel and tourism, business intelligence and interactive marketing.
