Markham students excel at minding their business

A dozen enterprising local students who excel at running their own businesses received Young Entrepreneur Awards at the Town of Markham Civic Centre early in October.

The awards, recognizing the winners of the Summer Company Program and the Markham Secondary School Business Plan Competition, were presented by Frank Scarpitti, Markham Deputy Mayor and Regional Councillor, and the Honourable Harinder Takhar, Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship. The programs, which help enterprising students start and run their own summer businesses, are initiatives of the Ontario Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship supported by the Markham Small Business Enterprise Centre and Seneca College.

“These important programs give today’s students, who will be tomorrow’s business leaders, the tools they need to succeed as entrepreneurs,” said Markham Mayor Don Cousens.

The Summer Company program provides hands-on business training, mentoring and awards of up to $3,000 to help full-time students run their own summer businesses. The Secondary School Business Plan Competition encourages high school students to develop a business concept, write a business plan and submit it for evaluation for prizes from $200 to $500.
