Women In Business

Multi-tasking & Multi-talented

According to the latest statistics, the outlook for Canadian women in business has never looked better. Not only are more women part of the nation’s workforce - they are also achieving much higher profiles within companies and a rapidly growing number are branching out on their own.

A recent study by CIBC Small Business reports that while the number of women in employment has risen steadily in recent years, self-employment among women has grown even faster.

“Over the past 15 years, the number of female employees rose by 30%, more than double the pace seen among male employees,” the study points out. “But this impressive growth is dwarfed by the dazzling 50% growth seen among women who were self-employed during the same period.”

Despite being about 800,000-strong, the number of self-employed women still accounts for just a third of all self-employed Canadians, but “CIBC Small Business” predicts that “if the current pace of growth is maintained, the number of women-run enterprises will top the one million mark by the end of the decade.” Industry Canada has reported the number of women who head companies in Canada has doubled since 1990. The study also refers to Ontario as “the home of 40% of all women-run small businesses in the country.” Interestingly, these women’s ability, drive and achievements are creating new opportunities propelling Markham to even greater heights.

The women featured in this issue of Markham Business magazine are powerful, smart, creative and energetic. They run large corporations and small businesses. They are entrepreneurs. And, they are successful.
