Yip’s Canada

An innovative package of music, arts and learning

Yip’s Canada has five divisions: Yip’s Children’s Choral and Performing Arts Centre, Yip’s Children’s Choir, Yip’s Music & Montessori Elementary School, Yip’s Chinese School and Yip’s Music Centre. These divisions are located on four campuses, including the Markham Main Campus, Markham Second Campus, Thornhill and Unionville.

Founded by the highly regarded music conductor Dr. Wai-Hong Yip of Hong Kong and Music Educator Katherine Kwok in 1990, Yip’s Canada promotes academic, language and performing arts excellence for young people. Under Katherine Kwok’s leadership, Yip’s Canada has won the 2006 Best Community Service Award presented by the Association of Chinese Canadian Entrepreneurs and the Business Excellence Awards in High Quality & Service presented by the Markham Board of Trade in 2006.

Over the past 16 years, Yip’s has played an active role of a good corporate citizen. In addition to providing caring and well-rounded education to students, the school has supported and participated in numerous charity and community events. Through its not-for-profit subsidiary, Yip’s Children’s Choir, the school has been actively promoting Chinese and Canadian cultures across Canada and overseas. The highly regarded and popular Yip’s performing group has volunteered and performed at hundreds of local and international cultural and music festivals and won tremendous applause from audiences.

In 2005, Yip’s formed Markham’s first not-for-profit Boys’ Choir and Chamber Orchestra for Young Artists to further promote the spirit of choral and instrumental music and better serve the community together with its existing famous and popular Yip’s Children’s Choir.

Yip’s opened its first Music and Montessori Elementary School in Unionville in 2004. It is the only private school in Markham that offers a unique and well-rounded curriculum that includes English, French and Chinese languages in daily teaching, as well as integrating performing arts and music lessons into the curriculum to add fun to learning, and to help children develop a balanced lifestyle and make full use of their talents. The school also places extra effort in promoting a healthy diet with its in-house chef preparing nutritional snacks and lunches to all full-time students. A supporter of multiculturalism, the school enriches its work environment with staff and students of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Yip’s also hosts an annual music festival to promote piano and violin music among young talents. Each year the school offers over $6,000 in scholarships and trophies to winners. The festival has grown in popularity to 850 entries in 2007.
