Why Choose an Insurance Broker?
By Andrea Blair
In Canada, you can purchase insurance a) directly from the insurance company; b) from an agent who only represents one insurer and can only offer that company’s products; c) on the Internet; d) through an insurance broker who can offer a choice of coverages from various companies.
The independent broker works for the client and maintains relationships with several insurance companies. He or she will carefully assess your insurance needs, then search for the product that best meets your requirements. Working with a broker allows you to purchase customized insurance that would be impossible to access on your own, or to comparison shop for the product that gives you the best possible coverage.
Insurance is a complex business, insurance policies are legal documents and not every policy is the same. It is the responsibility of the broker to understand the business and to be aware of current issues in the industry and changes that might affect you.
Brokers also understand the confusion and stress felt when a loss occurs. They can help guide you through the claims process. This is very important if you have ever been through such a situation.
The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario established by the Ontario Government regulates the licensing, professional competence, ethical conduct, and insurance-related financial obligations of all general insurance brokers in Ontario.
