Publisher's Picks: Local Writers make business headlines

Picture Step into the Spotlight

Two local business gurus have put Markham on the literary business map. Daniel Gauthier’s Tech-Knowledgy helps business owners and employees, as well as commercial and consumer purchasers, to make some sense of the over-complicated, over-hyped, often over-marketed, sometimes overpriced, and ultimately misleading world of computers and related products.

Tsufit’s Step into the Spotlight, which continues to attract considerable business interest since its publication last year, has generated positive comment from such influential business figures as Tom Peters, who describes her book as ‘necessary and delightful.’

Let’s start with Tech-Knowledgy, which the author himself refers to as ‘all you need to know to buy it, fix it or ask an expert.’ This self-help reference guide to computer technology is designed ‘to level the playing field between techies and non-techies.’ Gauthier’s premise is that computers are a necessary purchase these days, yet few people understand what they are buying and why, and which product is most appropriate to their needs. He also says many systems are being sold incorrectly, perhaps with the wrong processor, for example. As a result, many people are being sold the wrong product, or a computer system that far exceeds their requirements and their budget. But they buy anyway because they don’t know what else to do.

If all of this sounds familiar, Tech-Knowledgy is for you. This book could really save you money with its trouble-shooting tips, definitions of terms and explanations of various operating systems. As Gauthier says, “Tech-Knowledgy helps people to be informed enough to drastically lower the chances of being taken advantage of when it comes to computer technology.”

Step into the Spotlight is essentially a guide to getting noticed in business. Tsufit believes that ‘all business is show business’, and in this book she advises entrepreneurs, self-employed, employers and employees to stand back, take a good look at themselves and their businesses, and make sure they’re applying the basic rules of show business. If we want to succeed in business and in life, she says, we must constantly be in the spotlight, communicating our ideas and ourselves; if we are not in the spotlight, we are nowhere getting nowhere.

Not surprisingly, along with her legal qualifications, Tsufit is a performer herself – a singer, actress and comedienne. Because business people are also performers, she says, they must learn the basics. Just as performers must know their lines, business people must know their product and be able to present it concisely.

Memorable commercial characters such as Ronald McDonald and Colonel Sanders, memorable catch lines and ad campaigns, distinctive colours and aspirational advertisements – these are all part of the show business aspect.

Business, like life itself, is a performance. So don’t just stand there – get a copy of this book ($21.95) today and start getting you, your company and your product noticed.
